What is malic acid ? It's in a cough drop and in a fruity energy drink.?

when I put those words into the search engine in my toolbar, it came up wtih this:

Malic acid is a tart-tasting organic dicarboxylic acid that plays a role in many sour or tart foods. In its ionised form it is malate, an intermediate of the TCA cycle along with fumarate. It can also be formed from pyruvate as one of the anaplerotic reactions.

Apples contain malic acid, which contributes to the sourness of a green apple. Malic acid can make a wine taste tart, although the amount decreases with increasing fruit ripeness. The process of malolactic fermentation converts malic acid to much milder lactic acid. Malic acid, when added to food products, is denoted by E number E296.

In biological sources malic acid is homochiral and only exists as the (-)-malic acid enantiomer. Malic acid stars in the discovery of the Walden inversion and the Walden cycle in which (-)-malic acid first is converted into (+)-chlorosuccinic acid by action of phosphorus pentachloride. Wet silver oxide then takes the chlorine compound to (+)-malic acid which then reacts with PCl5 to the (-)-chlorosuccinic acid. The cycle is completed when silver oxide takes this compound back to (-)-malic acid.

Malic acid is the source of extreme tartness in so called "extreme candy", for example Mega Warheads. It is also used with or in place of the less sour citric acid in sour candies such as Jolly Ranchers and SweeTarts. These candies are sometimes labeled with a warning that excessive consumption can cause irritation of the mouth.

Acidity and Ulcer, Causes and Ayurvedic Natural Remedies

Acidity is a digestive system disorder condition characterized by excess production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach and making the person feel heartburn or dyspepsia. Leaving acidity untreated can lead to ulcers in digestive system.

Causes of Acidity

Excess hot and spicy food; fats, sweets, excess chocolate, alcohol, smoking, exposure to very hot conditions; and negative emotions like anger and tension can cause acidity.

Symptoms of Acidity

Burning sensation in the chest or abdomen, vomiting, belching and lack of appetite are the main symptoms of acidity.

Ayurvedic Remedies for Acidity

Chew a small piece of jaggery three or four times a day. Jaggery is prepared from sugarcane molasses.

Chew the seeds of a cardamom and a clove together after taking meals. This not only cures acidity, but also freshen breath.

Take a glass of milk, with a little ghee added to it at night. Take milk two or three times daily if you already have developed ulcer in the digestive tract.

You can also mix some castor oil in lukewarm milk and drink it. Make sure the castor oil is odorless.

Take a glass of hot water and put a tsp of aniseed in it. Leave it overnight. Add a tsp honey to the water and drink it. Repeat it two or three times a day for a week.

Drink a tender coconut's water and eat the fruity pulp. This soothes acidity.

Take 300mg or 500mg of shilajit a day for a month. This strengthens digestive tract and brings in additional benefits.
