Bullet Midrange Woofer
What amplifier do I need (mobile DJ setup)?
I am running (2) GMI-955s speakers into an amplifier into a 5-channel mixer that has turntable inputs.
Speaker Specifications:
· SINGLE 15" WOOFER WITH 2 1/2" VOICE COIL
· 7" X 17" MIDRANGE HORN WITH 40 OUNCE MAGNET
· FOUR 4" BULLET TWEETERS
· IMPEDANCE: 8 OHMS
· DURABLE CARPET FINISH
· TWO DUCTED PORT ENCLOSURE
· POWER HANDLING CAPACITY 500 WATTS RMS
· HIGH EFFICIENCY 1 WATT = 95 dB @1 M
What I am confused about is the watts and ohms situation for the amplifier. If each speaker is rated for 500 watts @ 8 ohms, then do I need an amp that has 1000 watts @ 8 ohms? Or is it 500 watts @ 4 ohms per channel? I'm confused. Please help.
EDIT: So I need a 2000 watt amp that produces 1000 watts per channel?
The short answer is that, ideally, your amplifier should be able to provide about (or at least) twice as much wattage per channel (at the speaker's nominal impedance) as the continuous power rating of your speaker.
Having less power than necessary risks damaging your speakers at worst, and distorts your output at best.
