What is the best type of shotgun microphone out on the market?
I will be shooting a movie using a Canon XH-A1 Camcorder. I need to know which shotgun microphone is the best. I want it to pick up crystal clear sound and only pick up what's directly in front of it. Also, it would be nice to also know what company manufactures the best shotgun mics. You Know.Like the way Sony makes the best TV'S,Canon makes the best cameras,Apple makes the best mp3 players etc. What company makes the best shotgun mics? What is the best shotgun mic? Help!
I've worked in pro audio in NYC for 20 years and know that Sennheiser is the industry standard. The MKH-416 is what the pro's use, but it costs $1050 and needs to be powered by an external mixer. The compact MKE-400 is designed for camcorders and only costs $200. But don't expect perfection from any little shotgun. If you are willing to make the investment. the MKH-416 will not disappoint. It's what they use in Hollywood. The ME66/K6 might be a good compromise for you. It can run off of a battery and costs $425. It is a popular microphone for electronic news gathering and video. The ME67/K6 is a longer version and costs $469. Longer is always better with a shotgun.
