Can you unplug an external hard drive w/o having to "safely remove it"?
I am a part time Dj and I use a software called SERATO, some of you might be familiar with it. I store all of my music on an external hard drive and some times I go to clubs or parties where the system is already set up and all I have to do is plug in my external. I currently use a 250gb Seagate external which, I accidently found out, allows me to plug in and unplug while the laptop is still running the Serato software and I don't have to go through the steps of "safley" removing the external. I am thinking about getting Western Digital's Passport external to save me some room in my gig bag as well as save me the time of looking for an outlet to plug the external into, but I don't want to get it if it does not allow me to unplug while the laptop is still "hot". Does anyone out there know if this is possible?
It depends on whether you use a disk cache for writes to the disk, if you do then unplugging without stopping it properly could cause data loss.
Of course if you only read from the drive and never write anything to it then you should be safe just pulling it out (all modern hard drives are self-parking so you don't need to worry about a head crash if you remove power to it).
