A Little Shark In A Big Pond â The Samsung S3550 Shark 3
For people looking for a practical mobile phone without breaking their banks, Samsung has the answer. The leading Korean mobile maverick has just unveiled its latest Shark range of handsets that consists of the candybar S5350 Shark and the sliders S5550 Shark 2 and S3550 Shark 3 targeting the low to mid markets. In particular, the Samsung S3550 Shark 3 which is not the top gun in the range, brings a stylish slider form factor to an otherwise bland and basic handset with an eye for the social networking crowd as well.
Back-to-Basics Compromises
As a non-smartphone non-touchscreen handset, the Shark 3 enjoys less functional clutter to give its high-end siblings a lot more to worry about in terms of complex functionality that is more open to failure. This is your no-nonsense mobile communications tool dressed in superb slider styling and sleek trendiness only Samsung can offer.
There’s no 3G. It’s you basic quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE on 2G/2.5G which does an excellent job to bring you mobile communications without spending a dime more. People in the wider markets for practical handsets rarely ever get to the need to browse or even send emails from their handset for 3G to matter. Certainly not when you only have a 2-inch QVGA TFT LCD screen unless you like your web pages shown at that size. Hence, there’s no WiFi too for the same reason.
But having said that, the phone has pretenses to being a social networking phone where you can access your Facebook, Bebo and MySpace from the homescreen. This is perhaps just a cursory nod to the SNS crowd. Without high speed 3G or WiFi, social networking on the handset becomes a real pain. In fact, accessing the net without high speeds is a pain.
Imaging is rudimentary with a 2-megapixel fixed focus camera with video recording. Not bad at all. It’s not anywhere near its brother Shark 2, but it gets the basic point-and-shoot functionality in moments you want to preserves. There’s also no GPS as the Shark 3 has no claim to be a SatNav gadget that many high end smartphones are turning into. But it comes bundled with Google Maps, though we remain skeptical it has any use on a 2-inch screen.
Multimedia is where the Samsung S3550 Shark 3 shines given its basic functionality. It has the media players to play the common audio and video formats out there. It even has stereo FM with RDS. It gets better with Samsung’s own DNSe processor for stereo widening and surround effects. Then you can listen on a wireless stereo earset thanks to its Bluetooth A2SP support. But don’t look for a wired headphone as there’s no 3.5mm jack.
Conclusion
Little pretenses but great as an all-around basic mobile phone that has premium slider looks. There’s little to complain about at its price point. Then again, people may find older year-old mobile phones with superior basics or even smartphones at bargain basement prices these days. The Shark 3 and its siblings in the Shark line are a fine mobile phone solution when they arrive soon. Just don’t expect more than the rudimentary basics.
