I need to know about Home Recording?
hi. I want to set up a small-scale home recording studio, and ive tried researching the basic but i have a lot of questions. Why do i need to buy a sound card/ sound card adapters? what is logic pro exactly? Will it allow me to mix? Is there software that cn generate synth-like electronica sounds? Do i need a mic cable/adaptor to plug into my laptop? so many questions, id be happy if someone just fed me the basics, how do you get started. i know nothing!!!
When I started I pretty much jumped in head first without knowing what I was doing. Through much trial and error (LOTS of error) I've come up with a setup that works for me. Everyone has different needs, but based on what you're asking and my own experience, I think I can help.
First, you don't need to buy a sound card/adapter. Unless your computer is a dinosaur, it should have a sound card built in. Your recording will come out better if you get a better sound card than the one that came stock, but I used a stock sound card for years with no problem.
Logic Pro is a digital audio workstation. Basically, a recording program. It's just one of many out there. Others include Pro Tools, Sony Acid, FL Studio, and Magix Music Maker (to name a few). It allows you to record, mix, loop, sequence MIDI and do pretty much any basic studio work. I find Magix to be the easiest to use.
As for software to generate synth sounds, there's way too much out there to list here. They are known as VSTi's, and they can produce just about any sound you can imagine. There are programs that emulate pianos, organs, entire symphonies, as well as synth sounds (both classic and new).
In the interest of brevity, let me point you to a site where you can learn much more than I can tell you here. Check out www.vintagesynth.com/forum. You'll find discussions on everything from recording to software synthesizers to classic hardware synthesizers. There should be plenty to help you get started, and if you still have questions, feel free to ask, and the folks there will be happy to help.
