Various forms of interface your device to your computer

If you're like me, are obsessed with home recording. I spent much time and money to learn the best way to connect my microphones and guitars to my computer over the years. The main lines that I chose and what works best.

Platform

From the beginning I decided to go with the Mac platform, just because I played with its iLife software includes "GarageBand" and was satisfied enough recording capacity. I do not see any, but I have a PowerBook G4 in 2003 and now has a MacBook Pro

Straight Line-In w / Radio Shack Adapter

The first thing I tried was to use the built-in line-in on my Mac, which is a 1 / 8 inch stereo female port. Therefore, I a 1 / 4 inch to 1 / 8 inch adapter from Radio Shack. It was the worst way to interface my guitar on my computer. Part of Radio Shack does not my instrument cable just right, causing wear abuse in the port of my Mac, and the metal sound was great.

iMic

The iMic is basically the same as the adapter from Radio Shack, just to have a shorter cable and it fits better my instrument cable. I still sound very metallic.

M-Audio Fastrack USB Audio Interface

I had my first fruit of success with this audio interface 99. Basically, take your guitar or microphone analog signal and converts digital. Send data Digital via USB to your recording software, and voila!

This solution was my first semi-professional experience record sound, combined with GarageBand some post-production mixing and effects. There was still a problem with the buzz and reviews, however.

Also Mixer borrow from a friend who lets me do a little mixing, and balance, and soon found himself making stereo recordings. It sounded well, but the increased interference. I had too many connections and cables and the potential for signal loss and corruption.

Alesis USB 8-Channel Mixer

This is the solution that worked best for me in a small house has increased the budget for a quality recording studio Virtual. This mixer was approximately $ 200, but acts as an analog mixer, legally, and a USB interface (both sides which can be used independently of each other). This mixer USB interface eliminates some of the seams of the platform, which allows its purest Record high quality. The mixer also has 100 preamplifier different effects.

So basically, the signal out of my guitar through a USB cable to my mixer via the USB cable directly to my computer. There are analog connections very few participants.

Behringer iAXE 393

There is another option that is less than analog. The Behringer iAXE 393 has a USB port right on it, allowing it to connect directly to your computer numeric. It's pretty incredible, the idea of allowing smooth digital recording. Hopefully more companies will rise to the guitar and add your own USB version of the guitar.

I tested the iAXE, and I must say that although the action was a little high, the guitar sounds great, pumping data directly into GarageBand.

Is it possible to connect an Ethernet cable to the FireWire by a kind of adapter?

You can do it in the interface USB.

From a theoretical point of view, it should be possible, but have not yet seen. USB has become ubiquitous, but Firewire is primarily limited to Mac and PC Premium Multimedia. There is little market for Ethernet adapters firewire for more.
