Is it better to pledge as a legacy candidate of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority or not?
I am an undergraduate college student at a HBCU. I am interested in pledging as a legacy candidate since my grandmother is an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha. I was told by an AKA that legacy candidates may endure a harder time than others(due to some legacy candidates feeling they are entitled to becoming members), then I was told by a non-member that legacy candidates are given priority in AKA? I just want to go about things in the correct way. Are there any pros & cons to filling out the legacy form or just pledging without anyone knowing you have family members who are AKA's?
Courtney, I have been told that it depends on the chapter. Some chapters really look up to legacies especially when their mother or grandmother remains active even after college. But I have been told (again hearsay from members) that some legacies are given a hard time due to the fact that they did not "earn" their membership but it was rather given. I say go for it. If you are a legacy it is something that you should be proud of and will be able to pass it on to your daughter and granddaughter. Good Luck!!!!
