can i make scratches with one turntable a mixer and listen through headphones that i plug into a mixer if i buy a vinyl and put it on a classic turntable with no ipod hook up or anything fancy?
thanks for the help
and if the mixer has an option to have two turntables pluged in can i only have one hooked up and still have it work?
There's a few things you might want to take into consideration......
Scratching involves moving the crossfader on the mixer quickly from one channel to the other. So you can do it with only one turntable and a mixer, but you need it to be plugged into an amp, speakers or hi fi. What you're hearing through headphones is either one channel, the other or a combination of both. You don't hear the scratching effect produced by quickly moving the crossfader between channels through the headphones. If you've got a hi fi, plug the output from the mixer into the auxilliary input on that.
It also depends on what type of turntable you're planning to use. There are many sorts. Pro DJ's who scratch use direct drives. If the turntable you have is belt drive, you will find it difficult to get enough traction to scratch effectively.
A slipmatt is a good idea. That's a bit of vinyl - shaped felt material that you put between the record and the turntable. If you don't have that, scratching may be quite sluggish and difficult.
Also, what sort of needle is there on the turntable? If it's not designed for professional DJ use, you will find that it wears down incredibly quickly or simply won't be robust enough and will end up breaking.
Having one turntable plugged into a mixer will work fine. You don't need all the channels to be filled. There's no problem with that. But you will definitely need a hi fi or a stereo rather than just headphones to hear your scratching. You might be able to make do with a belt drive turntable, no slipmatt and basic needles, but I couldn't guarantee it. You will probably run into difficulties at some stage with equipment that isn't designed for the purpose.
