What is the best mic to use for loud outdoor recording (like concerts)?
I shoot video every year for a large music conference. Sometimes I can get the sound-guy to patch in my minidisk recorder which gets sound right off the board eliminating all bad noises. Often times i cant do that and am usually standing right in front of the loud-speakers. This peaks out the cameras built in microphone and sounds horrible on the video. So bad that I cannot use the audio and end up pasting the original song under the video. Of course this eliminates the crowd noise and other live aspects of the recording.
Im looking for a semi-inexpensive microphone that can handle standing close to a speaker, crowd noises, and be able to reproduce the all frequency ranges (vocals, bass) on the tape as close to being connected to the board as possible..
am I asking too much?
This mic would be connected to the cameras MIC IN port
First, beg the audio operator for a patch from the board to your minidisk and make sure that you have all the cables needed to make it easy. Bribe him if you must.
If this doesn't work, place the minidisk near the sound booth, along with one or two super-cardioid (shotgun) condensor mics with shock mounts and wind screens that are facing the stage. Place the mics in a position where they will not pick up private conversations from the crowd. It might work best if you place them on boom stands mounted vertically to keep them high.
Both of these methods are safest if you have someone to monitor them with headphones continually and make sure nothing is going wrong while you are shooting the video.
