How Do producers add the master quality to a recorded song?

I'm into making music, when i watch videos on youtube most producers record their own sound with live instruments or anything else.

How can i do that, i have a great mic, edirol keyboard etc. i just want to know how to get that master quality sound.

There's a lot of things that go into it. You can pretty much break down into two main categories: Software and Equipment.

Equipment - A lot of people that record their own stuff use some type of Audio Interface or Digital Mixer. This could be a 12 Channel Onyx Mixer with Firewire Card, a simple Mbox 2, or a DigiRack system. This is crucial, because it takes the live analog signal and converts it into a qualtiy digital signal with 0 latency. This is what they plug their instruments into.

Microphone and preamps are a big deal. You say you have a great microphone. Well I'd consider a great microphone in the $600-$1500 price range. And that's no joke. A quality microphone for a recording on vocals, is usually going to be a nice condenser microphone plugged into a good preamp. This is a big part of getting vocals to sound good. When you have a good condenser mic into a preamp, you get really qualtiy, detailed sound without having to turn the juice up so high that you pick up a lot of unwanted sounds.

Software - The recording software and virtual instrument software is big too. Pro Tools, Cubase, and Tracktion are some of the big named, popular softwares. These allow you to record, edit, mix, and master. This is how you take a recording and make it sound polished and professional. With a nice recording software you'll be able to mix tracks, blend sounds, edit the EQ and volume. Add filters and effects. There are filters used in mastering that help clean up vocal tracks and give an overall qualtiy sound. Also programs like Reason will give you quality virtual instruments for drums, piano, flutes, cellos, violines, guitars, bass, etc.

So for you to get a master qualtiy sound, pickup an Audio Interface to start with. Then look at upgrading your microphone and getting a preamp. That would be a good start. The Audio Interface will come with software. Here's a good one within a reasonable price.
