what's the best starter mic for home studio recording?
i need a decent mic for home studio recording. i need it to be cheap too, under 150$ (retail). i also already have a preamp w/ phantom power. and i hope nobody suggests a sm57 or 58

There is no such thing as a "starter mic". Microphones are either usable or unusable. You need a usable microphone for under $150 - no such thing exists that is brand new. With that as your budget you'll have to luck into something used. I would try ebay and craig's list.
Microphones that you might be able to score used in that price range would be the CAD E100. This would be an excellent condenser and it has a lot of uses. You might also luck into a Rode NT1000.
Microphones used by professionals cost thousands of dollars. These are the microphones you hear on all of the commercial releases. Studio owners, such as myself, do not like to spend $5000+ on a single microphone but I've learned that the public has grown accustomed to hearing things a certain way and will reject a recording, regardless of how "good" it is, if it doesn't have "the sound".
You want the sound? you gotta drop the cash.
Next time, I would suggest a more specific posting. If no one but you, your friends and family will ever hear this recording and this is just a bedroom hobby then I would suggest using the cheapest mic you can find. If, on the other hand, you expect to earn money from this endeavor then you've got no choice but to step up and run with the big dogs.
